During the Olympic trials there were so many posts from various athletes either celebrating the success of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, or sharing their sorrow at not making the team. This post is for you, or any of us going through our own challenges right now. Firstly I want to give you a hug, and tell you it’s OK, even if it feels really shitty right now. Here I’m going to share 6 tips for overcoming a bad race, competition, performance, race etc. and focusing on resilience:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Acknowledge how you’re feeling, let your emotions out, don’t cover them up, find some way to release. Listening to music might be one way to help you work through your feelings right now, turn to music that resonates with you right in this moment, explore how you’re feeling.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Don’t mourn for too long. Focus on how you can turn this into a learning experience. Find a way to have a short-term memory for failures and a long-term memory for your successes. Once you’ve learnt from your failures there’s no reason to revisit them. Learn from them and move on.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Take yourself out of the situation. Be objective, look at the event from an outside perspective as if you were observing yourself, what could you do differently next time?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Find a phrase to help you release. This might be something like “burn it” let it go” (did anyone else just hear Elsa?!) “bin it” a phrase you can use to help you release when you’re stuck on a bad day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Embrace the next goal. Focus on your next goal, put your attention on moving forward. You can’t change the past, look ahead, find something else to motivate you. Ensure it’s inline with your values.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6. Focus on how you want to feel. You’re really chasing the feelings that the goal represents. You can choose the way you want to feel every single day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
